PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder in which a recording head can load an independent ink cartridge on a carriage from the front side of the recorder. SOLUTION: An ink cartridge 152 can be inserted/drawn out freely into/from a carriage 151 from the front side of a recorder and a means 120 for stopping the ink cartridge is provided. Since the ink cartridge can be inserted into the carriage from the front side of the recorder and can be loaded while being stopped with a strong force even in case of an ink jet recorder where the ink cartridge is independent from the recording head, an ink introduction needle expending from the recording head can be inserted into the ink supply opening of the ink cartridge and can be surely brought into intimate contact therewith.
