PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simplified contaminant detecting device for a paper sheet with reduced number of components, detecting an included contaminant of the paper sheet, determining type and size of the contaminant, and also determining a position of the contaminant in the paper sheet. SOLUTION: The contaminant detecting device comprises a contaminant detecting part 31 disposed at a position where the conveyed paper sheet 11 or a conveying belt 20 for grappling and conveying the paper sheet 11 slidably pass and collides against the contaminant 40 included in the paper sheet 11 to vibrate. The detecting device also comprises a signal converting part 32 for detecting the vibration of the contaminant detecting part 31 and converting the vibration to an electric signal, and contaminant identifying part 33 for identifying the contaminant 40 included in the paper sheet 11 based on the electric signal from the signal converting part 32.
