PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling a sliding nozzle upon the occurrence of breakout which can minimize damage to a continuous casting machine upon the occurrence of breakout. SOLUTION: In a continuous casting method including the step of feeding molten steel (5) within a tundish (2) into a casting mold (1) while regulating the molten steel surface level so as for the level of the molten steel within the casting mold to be a given value, when the reduction rate of the molten steel surface level has consecutively exceeded a predetermined threshold value, a sliding nozzle (3) is fully closed to cut off the feed of the molten steel into the casting mold.
