PURPOSE: To provide a characteristic evaluating method and an evaluating device for the air-fuel ratio sensor of an engine using the test gas generated simply at a low cost. CONSTITUTION: The mixing ratio and heating temperature of nitrogen 81, oxygen 82, and hydrocarbon 83 are regulated, and the combustion gas 85 generated via spontaneous combustion is used for evaluation in this characteristic evaluating method for an air-fuel ratio sensor 7. This characteristic evaluating device 1 is provided with a gas feeding means 11, a flow regulating means 20, a combustion means 30 for the spontaneous combustion of mixed gas 84, a measuring means 40, and a judging means 45 judging the quality of the air-fuel ratio sensor 7 based on the data of the measuring means 40. The air-fuel ratio is preferably regulated while the flow of the hydrocarbon gas 83 and the total flow are kept at constant values, and the hydrocarbon gas 83 is preferably kept at the explosion lower limit concentration or below. |
