PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a CCD line sensor the read resolution of which can be changed. SOLUTION: A shift gate is provided alternately while sandwiching a shift gate for each two pixels adjacent to each other of photo diodes laid out linearly and switching of an ordinary mode of electric charge reading for each pixel and a mode where electric charges of the two pixels adjacent to each other are composed and read is performed by having only to change a drive pulse.
