<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high reliability, long lifetime, high output semiconductor laser having an oscillation wavelength of 760-800 nm and an optical disc reproducer/recorder employing that semiconductor laser. <P>SOLUTION: At least first and second lower clad layers 103 and 133, a quantum well active layer 105 consisting of a well layer and a barrier layer, and first and second clad layers 107 and 109 are formed sequentially on a GaAs substrate 101. The well layer is composed of InGaAsP. Thickness d of the well layer is set as thick as 160 Å and a value of Γ/d is set as large as 2×10<SP>-4</SP>Å<SP>-1</SP>, where Γ is the coefficient for confining light in one layer of the well layer. According to the arrangement, a high output semiconductor laser exhibiting a high COD level while sustaining good threshold value characteristics and temperature characteristics can be obtained. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
