System for determining the unique identifier of a particular key (6) amongst a group of keys used. Each key has a particular distinctive sign that is easily memorized by the key owner and a memory (18) containing a unique identifier (20) for the key. The system has means (42) for determining the unique identifier of a key from a list (30) of keys used. Said list contains the unique identifier and an identifier (22) for its distinctive sign. Means are also provided for automatic recording of the distinctive sign identifier. The invention also relates to a corresponding method and key management unit.
