An engine which receives fuel from a pressure reservoir (10), a pressure amplifier (12) and a nozzle (42) may be protected from damage from faulty injection by rapid fault detection. The detection is made electronically from data such as speed, torque or pinking and a signal (S) causes a control unit (70) to cut the fuel supply by exhausting the difference chamber (18) of the amplifier and also stopping the injector control (46). An Independent claim is also included for a method for cutting fuel supply on detection of an injector fault by using a distributor to exhaust the difference chamber of the pressure amplifier.
