PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent device having a life and exhibiting a high luminous efficiency by prescribing a luminous organic substance to be doped to an organic luminescent layer. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent device is provided with a luminescent layer 3 composed of an organic material with the luminous organic substance doped thereto between a positive electrode 1 and a negative electrode 2. This organic electroluminescent device is provided with, at least, three luminescent layers 3a, 3b, and 3c composed of the organic material with different luminous organic substances doped thereto, and the luminous organic substance doped in the luminescent layer 3a positioned in the side of the positive electrode 1 and the luminescent layer 3c positioned in the side of the negative electrode 2 has an energy gap larger than the energy gap of the luminous organic substance doped in the luminescent layer 3b except them. The energy gaps of the luminous organic substances to be doped in the luminescent layer 3 are thus prescribed, so that the energy can be efficiently moved from the luminescent layer 3 positioned in the side of the negative electrode 2 to the luminescent layer 3 positioned in the side of the positive electrode 1.
