PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device which permits the use of optical recording media of various forms. SOLUTION: The optical disk device is provided with means (7) for controlling the rotation of a recording medium (1), means (3, 4 and 6) for reproducing or recording information by irradiating the recording medium with a laser, and means (8) for discriminating the form of the recording medium and setting the maximum number of revolutions according to the discriminated form of the recording medium and the recording medium (1) is rotated at the number of revolutions below the set maximum number of revolutions. The form of the recording medium is discriminated in accordance with the signals detected by optical sensors (11 and 12) arranged across the recording medium or is discriminated in accordance with the information relating to the form of the recording medium received from a host position 100.
