PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform data communications among a plurality of client devices without applying an excessive load to the other devices and to easily perform communication setting for the data communications. SOLUTION: Connection requests are sent from a transmitting side IM client 3-1 and a receiving side IM client 3-2 through a proxy server 2 to an IMS server 1. When it is recognized that connections are requested from the clients on the same LAN, the IMS server 1 transmits an intra-LAN connection notice through the proxy server 2 to each of the IM clients 3-1 and 3-2. On the basis of the intra-LAN connection notice, the IM clients 3-1 and 3-2 change setting of a connection destination which has been the proxy server 2 to the IM clients 3-2 and 3-1. Thus, the IM clients 3-1 and 3-2 can perform peer-to-peer data communications without intervention of the proxy server 2 or the IMS server 1. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
