PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader for employing a contact type image sensor, capable of attaining two types of reading as skim-through reading and book reading, eliminating a shock caused between glass plates, and attaining stable reading of an image for a long period of time. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a glass support member for integrally supporting a contact glass for skimming-through reading and a contact glass for book reading, and a jump base, and the glass support member is used for a mobile guide rail of the contact type image sensor so as to eliminate a step difference between the glass plates thereby attaining stable reading.
