A network manager (20) is coupled to a network (4). A number of control units (6) is also coupled to the network, each having a plurality of inputs and outputs which can be coupled to one or more devices (8). The network manager transmits to the control units, over the network, programs for the control units to run on local processors to control the devices coupled to their inputs and outputs. Input signals received from the devices are temporarily stored as data by the control units, and then transmitted over the network to the network manager for storage (34). A results filter (32) is preferably associated with the network manager to filter the data after it has been transferred from the control unit or units and stored at the network manager. |
