PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for dephosphorizing hot metal by which the hot metal can be dephosphorized up to a low concentration range efficiently without causing slopping. SOLUTION: In the method for dephosphorizing the hot metal, by which powdery slag-making agent containing lime and oxidizing agent powder consisting essentially of a metallic oxide, are injected into the hot metal held in a refining vessel, the grain diameter of the oxidizing agent powder consisting essentially of the metallic oxide, is smaller than the average grain diameter of the slag-making agent. In this case, the oxidizing agent powder consisting essentially of the metallic oxide, is desirably to consist essentially of an iron oxide generated with a pickling waste liquid treatment of a steel material, or the injection is desirable to perform with carrier gas through a lance dipped into the molten metal in a refining vessel from the upper part or a tuyere arranged at the bottom part of the vessel for refining.
