摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the integrator of a short integrator length capable of appropriately setting the numerical range of a constant in a conditional expression stipulating the integrator length and uniformizing a luminous flux density even when applied to a device provided with a short arc light source and a screen whose aspect ratio is about 0.56, an illumination optical system and a projection type image display device. SOLUTION: A luminous flux from a light source part 20 is converged to the light incident and 14 of the integrator 11 composed of a hollow member (tunnel) 12 for uniformizing the luminous flux density by a condenser lens 21. The luminous flux is passed from a light emission end 16 through a relay lens 22 and optically modulated by an image display element 23 and the luminous flux is magnified and projected on the screen 25 by a projection lens 24. The aspect ratio of the rectangular end face of the light emission end 16 is smaller than 0.6, and in the conditional expression L<SB>1</SB>=k<SB>1</SB>(ε<SB>1</SB>/tanθ<SB>1</SB>) in which the integrator length is L<SB>1</SB>, the length of the short side of the rectangular end face isε<SB>1</SB>and the perspective angle of the luminous flux made incident on the integrator isθ<SB>1</SB>, k<SB>1</SB>is the constant of≥3.5.
