Method for capture and portrayal of the position of a medical instrument within a patient organ space, whereby intracorporeal 2-D ultrasonic images of a hollow organ together with an inserted catheter type instrument are made. At the same time the spatial position and orientation of the images are determined using a position capture system. A 3-D ultrasonic image is generated from the 2-D images and presented on a monitor using a recorded coordinate system. The invention also relates to a corresponding medical examination and treatment device.
