The gear selection system for a change-speed gearbox has a braking system (10) with a guide member with parallel grooves (13) on a gear selection shaft (12). The parallel grooves hold the shaft at one of several angular settings while a gear is being engaged by longitudinal movement. A fixed finger (16) engages in the grooves. The walls of the central portion of the grooves (11) are cut away to allow rotation of the shaft when in its neutral longitudinal position. A pin (25) on the shaft engages in a joggled groove (24) in a selector sleeve (20) moved longitudinally by an actuator (17). An actuator system (22,23) may rotate the sleeve.
