<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal apparatus excellent in durability and preventing a switching characteristic of a switching element from deteriorating. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal apparatus is provided with a light emitting side TFT array substrate 10 having the switching element with a semiconductor layer, a structure where a light enters from an opposite substrate 20 into a liquid crystal layer 50 and is emitted from the substrate 10, a polarizer 105 as a polarization means 40a on a side of the substrate 10, a light absorbing polarizer 41 on a light emitting side of the polarizer 105, and a light absorbing polarizer 42 as a polarization means 40b of a side of the substrate 20. The polarizer, 105 is provided with a structured double refraction element on one surface of a light transmitting substrate. The structured double refraction element has a plurality of light absorbing elements arrayed as stripes.
