The method involves backing the sand layer with a support layer (23), for later use as a visible covering. A frame (1) is filled with sand (9) with a desired structure and handled to fix the structure. The fixed sand is subject to further processing. Visible protective or support layers of sand are formed, in which a support layer (23) is laid on a smoothed sand surface (9a) at the upper edge of the frame and fixed or glued to the upper sand layer. A reinforcement layer may also be added before further processing. Alternatively, a naturally formed sand layer may be used to form a sand or sand or gravel pit and a support layer, in which the support layer is laid and secured on the sand or gravel pit, and a reinforcement layer may be added. Independent claims are included for a device for implementing the method and for a sand layer produced according to the method and using the device.
