A solid phase extraction (SPE) device (11) having a reservoir(16) with an opening; a well (15) comprising an internally tapered wall, the wall having a wider interior diameter at an end closest to the opening than at an exit spout(17); a first filter(14) with the well(15); a bed(12) of sorbent particles within the well(15) below the first filter(14); and a second filter(13) having a diameter smaller than the first filter(14) within the well(15) below the bed (12)of sorbent particles and above the exit spout(17) is provided. A method of performing SPE using the device (11) is also provided.
