<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a branching method of fiber ribbon for taking out fiber ribbon at an arbitrary site of the fiber ribbon. <P>SOLUTION: When the coated optical fiber 2 is to be branched from the fiber ribbon 1, first an auxiliary layer 6 is formed at an arbitrary site in the fiber ribbon 1. Then, a notching 7 being extended in the widthwise direction of the fiber ribbon 1 is formed on the auxiliary layer 6. As a method for forming the auxiliary layer 6, the fiber ribbon 1 is coated with resin having an adhesive property and a curing property for fixing, or a thin plate is adhered to the fiber ribbon 1. After that, the fiber ribbon 1 is bent and pulled to break the auxiliary layer 6 with the notching 7 as a starting point. Then, a collective covering 3 in the fiber ribbon 1 is broken together with the auxiliary layer 6, and the coated optical fiber 2 is exposed.
