PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an Ni plated steel sheet for battery cans having an excellent corrosion resistance, battery characteristics, and slidability. SOLUTION: The plated steel sheet for battery cans has an Ni plating layer which is softened by recrystallization on a surface constituting the outer surface of the can and further has a soft Ni plating layer which does not undergo recrystallization on the upper layer thereof. The Ni plating layer which is softened by the recrystallization is formed through base iron and an Fe-Ni diffused layer and the Ni plating layer which does not undergo the recrystallization is preferably formed by dull plating. The desirable amount of Ni plating is≥0.1 g/m<SP>2</SP>of the Ni plating layer which does not undergo the recrystallization and≥9 g/m<SP>2</SP>of the Ni plating layer which is softened by the recrystallization in total with the Ni of the Fe-Ni diffused layer.
