The iron based stainless steel slab comprises in weight percent, 15 to 17% chromium, 9 to 10% nickel, 0.1 to 0.2 niobium, up to 0.03% carbon 0.5%, manganese, silicon not exceeding 0.5%, and the balance of iron and inevitable impurities. The steel sheet is produced by the processes of general hot rolling of the steel slab having the same chemical composition as mentioned above as a starting material, annealing of the hot rolled sheet at 1200 to 1260deg.C, cold rolling of the annealed sheet at a reduction ratio of not less than 80%, and continuous annealing of the cold rolled sheet at the temperature of the martensite/austenite inverse transformation finish temperature to 20deg.C higher than that, and continuous cooling in air or quenching in water.
