PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating composition having barrier properties against a gas such as oxygen and water vapor, hardly reduced in the barrier properties even in a humid condition, and free from a compound with anxiety about harmful properties to a human body. SOLUTION: The gas-barrier coating composition comprises (a) a vinyl alcoholic resin, and a cohydrolyzed product and/or cocondensed product of (b) at least one kind selected from the group consisting of a metal alcoholate represented by R<SP>1</SP><SB>m</SB>M(OR<SP>2</SP>)<SB>n</SB>, a hydrolyzate of the metal alcoholate, a condensate of the metal alcoholate, a chelate compound of the metal alcoholate, a hydrolyzate of the metal chelate compound, a condensate of the metal chelate compound, a metal acylate, a hydrolyzate of the metal acylate and a condensate of the metal acrylate, with (c) at least one kind selected from an alkoxysilane represented by R<SP>3</SP><SB>p</SB>Si(OR<SP>4</SP>)<SB>4-p</SB>, a hydrolyzate thereof and a condensate thereof.
