An article of magnesium or a magnesium alloy which has, on the surface thereof, an electroconductive anodic oxidation coating exhibiting a resistance value of the surface of the coating, as measured between two terminals being 10 mm apart from each other, of 100 ohm or less; and a method for producing the article which comprises immersing a magnesium or magnesium alloy product in an electrolyte which contains 0.1 to 1 mol/L of a phosphate group and 0.2 to 5 mol/L of ammonia or an ammonium ion and has a pH of 8 to 14, and subjecting the surface of the product to an anodic oxidation treatment. The article of magnesium or a magnesium alloy has, on the surface thereof, an anodic oxidation coating which combines good electroconductity and excellent corrosion resistance.
