PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing an Ni plated steel sheet for a battery can which is excellent in corrosion resistance, battery properties and slidability. SOLUTION: In the method of producing a plated steel sheet for a battery can, the face used as the outer face of the can is subjected to Ni plating and/or Ni-P alloy plating in which the content of P is, by mass, 0.1 to <3% in order, and, after that, heating treatment is performed to form an Fe-Ni diffusion layer on the boundary between the plated layer and ferrite. In this case, preferably, the coating weight of the Ni-P alloy plating is≥1 g/m<SP>2</SP>in terms of Ni, and the total Ni content in the Ni plating and the Ni-P alloy plating is≥9 g/m<SP>2</SP>. Further, the face used as the inner face of the can is subjected to one or two kinds selected from Ni plating and Ni-P alloy plating in which the content of P is 0.1 to <3% in an Ni content (by the total Ni content in the case of double layers) of≥1 g/m<SP>2</SP>, and, after that, heating treatment is performed.
