PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To predict the residual settlement and residual horizontal deformation of the ground where liquefaction phenomenon is caused by earthquake. SOLUTION: The earth in situ is sampled from the ground (stratums B-D) to form specimens as element test layers. A stratum whose characteristics are well known may be substituted by a numerical model (stratum A). Input conditions are set, and a vertical stress, horizontal stress, and initial shearing force corresponding to the upper load the stratum of each depth of that point is worked to the respective stratums, whereby the stress state of the earth before the occurrence of earthquake is reproduced. A shearing displacement and moving quantity of pore water by earthquake are given to the specimens, and the shearing stress and generation quantity of pore water pressure as the response are obtained. In the element test execution stratum, the displacement and moving quantity of pore water calculated in the stratum element are actually given to each element to measure the restoring force and pore water pressure. This step is successively repeated, whereby liquefaction phenomenon can be simulated. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
