PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve printing speed of an image forming device by providing an image forming device, and a method for control thereof, capable of executing discrimination of a printing medium 10 at the tip alignment of the printing medium 10 that is executed by driving for reverse rotation of a feed roller 131 just before the printing medium 10 enters an image forming part 210. SOLUTION: This image forming device is provided with a printing medium carrying passage 240 provided inside the image forming device 200 to guide upper and lower surfaces of the printing medium 10 being carried from a printing medium supply device 120 to the image forming part 210, a feed roller 131 installed above the printing medium carrying passage 140 to carry the printing medium 10 carried from the printing medium supply device 120 to the image forming part 210, and a printing medium type discrimination sensor 290 provided on the upstream side of the feed roller 131 above the printing medium carrying passage 240 to discriminate material of the printing medium 10, and output a discrimination signal.
