The hollow rope includes marker threads (15, 16), preferably having a different color from that of the rope and also a lower tensile strength than the rope as a whole. The threads are intended to rupture when a preset stress is applied to the rope and are designed to protrude from it in one or more places to provide a visual indication (21, 22) that a predetermined tensile force limit has been reached. Preferably a number of marker threads are twisted together to produce stranded markers (17, 18).
