(Poly)alkylene glycol diethers are used as solvents in a method for the production of alkylene carbonates by reaction of carbon dioxide with alkylene oxides in the presence of a catalyst. A method for the production of alkylene carbonates involves the catalyzed reaction of carbon dioxide with alkylene oxide in presence of compounds of formula (I) as solvent. R1-X-(A-O)n-R2 (I) R1, R2 = 1-10C alkyl or alkenyl, or 6-18C aryl; X = O or N((A-O)m-R3); R3 = H, 1-10C alkyl or alkenyl, or 6-18C aryl; m = 0-500; A = 2-4C alkylene; n = 1-900.
