Tiebars connecting the fixed and moving tool-carrying platens have a tubular cross-section whose interior holds a spindle of a drive system. For closure of the moving platen each spindle(9) rotates inside a nut(8) at one end of a tube(7) moving telescopically inside the tiebar(6). The spindle drive system(7,8,9) is powered by an electric motor(11), preferably a servomotor. Two diagonally opposed or all tiebars have a tubular cross-section and house a spindle drive. All drives are synchronised by a belt drive system(10,12).
