The current limiter has resistive current limitation provided by a superconductor connected in parallel with a coil section of a commutation conductor, providing a magnetic field, the superconductor and the commutation conductor formed by a superconductive layer (4) and a commutation layer (5) applied to a substrate (2). The coil section of the commutation conductor has windings on one or both sides of the superconductor, with a diffusion barrier layer (10) between the superconductive layer and the commutation layer and the substrate. The commutation layer may be applied to both sides of the substrate with conductor sections (13) extending through the substrate for connecting them together.
