<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of a defect caused by rubbing treatment of an alignment layer. <P>SOLUTION: A color filter 23, provided on a surface of a second substrate 20 that opposes a liquid crystal, has a surface profile defining the state of alignment of the liquid crystal 40. More specifically, the color filter 23 has a plurality of alignment control protrusions 231 of which the top portions extend in one direction.
