<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method and a driving device for an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine acts on a driving wheel or the like of a vehicle via an adjustable transmission, particularly, a continuously adjustable transmission. In the control method, the supply of fuel to the internal combustion engine is at least reduced according to driving conditions, the internal combustion engine is operated by an engine brake, and transmission shifting of the transmission is adjusted in accordance with at least one driving parameter of the vehicle irrelevant to an intention of a driver.
