Disclosed is the use of a conjugate of IL-6 and the receptor thereof, especially an IL-6/sIL-6R fusion protein, for inducing the cellular expression of SCF and Flt-3L. Preferably, the conjugate is used in the ex vivo expansion of stem cells or precursor cells, especially those of the hematopoetic system.
