A gas diffusion layer for fuel cell, comprising a woven fabric of carbon fib er warp and weft threads, wherein the spacing (X) between neighboring texture points at which warp and weft threads cross each other and the thickness of woven fabric (Y) satisfy the formula 1.4 <= X/Y <= 3.5. This reduces t he unevenness of substrate surface and inhibits microshort-circuiting attribute d to sticking of woven fabric carbon fibers into a polymer electrolyte film of fuel cell, thereby enhancing the performance of the fuel cell. For further inhibition of the sticking of carbon fibers of gas diffusion layer substrate into the polymer electrolyte film, (1) a fastening pressure per area of contact between individual electrode and individual conductive separator pla te ranging from 1 to 20 kgf/cm2 is applied to the fuel cell, or (2) before disposing of the gas diffusion layer on the polymer electrolyte film, the surface of the gas diffusion layer is heated so as to smooth irregular surfa ce of carbon fibers. |
