PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the residual amount of toner with stable accuracy even when the variance of quality is found in a light emitting element S1 and/or a light receiving element S2. SOLUTION: The toner residual amount detecting device is equipped with a toner container 100 equipped with a container 10 where a light transmitting window 30 and a reflector 32 are disposed, the light emitting element S1 radiating light toward the reflector 32 through the window 30, and the light receiving element S2 receiving the light reflected by the reflector 32 through the window 30. The light emitting element S1 and the light receiving element S2 are disposed so that an angleθbetween a radiated light beam L1 radiated toward the reflector 32 from the light emitting element S1 and a reflected light beam L2 reflected by the reflector 32 and going toward the light emitting element S2 may be within 45°to 90°.
