Coupled production of fatty acids (I) and acid-free glyceride mixtures (II) involves: (a) partial cleavage of triglycerides, (b) esterification of the mixture with boric acid, (c) fractional distillation to give a low-boiling fraction (free I) and a high-boiling fraction (borate esters) and (d) hydrolysis of the borate esters to give (II).
