<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet detecting device capable of improving a reading speed to realize high speed POD products. <P>SOLUTION: An image reading part 205 in a CIS 204 has a plurality of chips 1-n each of which incorporates a group of light receiving elements and a shift register. Based on a shift pulse inputted from the outside as a trigger, all the data in the chips 1-n are loaded to the shift registers 211b-218b. Synchronized with an external clock, the shift register 211b outputs set data outside through an output channel 1, and the shift register 218b outputs them outside through an output channel 218b. In the case image data are outputted through the output channel 1, the detection time for one chip is (operating clock) ×(the number of the light receiving elements per chip).
