A carton-making assembly (1) rests on a base (6) and applies two or more coatings of liquid or paste to both sides (2a, 2b) of a pre-dried fibre web. Each coating station (5) is followed by a non-contact drier (8, 10). Each coating station is esp. of the same type. The web feed direction to each drying station is identical. The top and bottom drying stations are identical and are located in the same plane (7). As seen in the direction of web movement (L) the first coating station (5.1) applies a foundation coat to the web (2) rear face (2a). The second coating station (5.2) applies a foundation coat to the top side (2b) of the web. The third coating station (5.3) applies a final coat to the top side (2a) of the web. The fourth coating station (5.4) applies a final coat to the web upper face (2b). The direct-coating stations (5.1-5.4) operate in that sequence and rest on the same foundation. The top (2b) stations apply a coat containing approx. 60 per cent solids and are each followed by an infra-red drier (11) and a hot air drier (10). The bottom stations (2a) are followed by an infra-red drier (11) and an airturn (8) and cooling cylinder (9).
