The steering column (1) is held in two identical ball bearings (3,4) situated at the ends of an outer sleeve (2). The assembly incorporates a split compensating ring. A connecting component is provided between the end faces of the split compensating ring and is connected to the end faces at points which are offset in relation to each other in the radial direction. The connecting component has an outer arm extending in the circumferential direction and is connected to one of the end faces, while an inner arm is connected to the other end face, and a radially extending arm is connected to the two other arms.
