Cross beam connecting the two side regions of a vehicle structure

The crossbeam (1) is tubular with fastenings at the ends. There are fastenings e.g. for airbags and for the steering column. The tube on the driver's side (2) has thick walls and is made of steel. It carries the airbag mounting and the steering column mounting. There is a greater length of thin-walled light alloy tube (3) on the passenger side, carrying the mounting for the passenger airbag. The outside diameters of the two tubes are the same and the tubes are welded together.
