The compressor has a drive shaft (16) with a fixed disc (19) which has a hinged connection (25) to an aluminium alloy swash plate (21). The inclination of the swash plate can be adjusted to alter the stroke of single-acting pistons (32) and therefore the output of the compressor. Top dead centre of the piston stroke coincides with the centreline of the hinge.The hinge comprises a pair of slotted arms (64) which are integral with the disc; an arm (61) integral with the swashplate, and a hinge pin (63) which is retained by end stops, lock screws, or by being an interference fit in the swashplate arm.A low-friction coating is applied to the contact surfaces of the hinge components
