Use of a combination of 2-chloro-6-methyl-3-aminophenol as coupler with an oxidation base selected from para-phenylenediamine compounds (I), double bases (II), pyrazolo-(1,5-a)-pyrimidines (III), orthoaminophenols and diaminopyridines in hair dye compositions. The paraphenylenediamine compound has the formula (I) R1 = H, 1-4 C alkyl, 1-4 C hydroxyalkyl, 2-4 C polyhydroxyalkyl, alkoxy(C1-C4)alkyl(C1-C4), or 1-4 C alkyl substituted by a N-containing group, phenyl or 4'-aminophenyl group; R2 = H, 1-4 C alkyl, 1-4 C monohydroxyalkyl, 2-4 C polyhydroxyalkyl, alkoxy(C1-C4)alkyl(C1-C4), or 1-4 C alkyl substituted by a N-containing group; R3 = H, 1-4 C alkyl, 1-4 C monohydroxyalkyl, 1-4 C mesylaminoalkoxy, 1-4 C acetylaminoalkoxy, 1-4 C carbamoylaminoalkoxy or 1-4 C alkyl substituted by a N-containing group; R4 = H or 1-4 C alkyl; provided that at least one of R1, R2, R3 and R4 is different to H; when R1, R2 and R4 are each H at the same time, then R3 is different to Me; when one of R1 and R2 = 1-4 C alkyl or 1-4 C monohydroxyalkyl and the other of R1 and R2 = H, then at least one of R3 and R4 is other than an H atom; and when R1 and R2 are both 1-4 C monohydroxyalkyl radicals, then at least one of R3 and R4 is other than an H atom. The double bases have the formula (II) Z1 and Z2 = OH or NH2 which may be substituted by a 1-4 C alkyl or by a bridging link Y; the bridging link Y = 1-14 C alkylene which may be linear or branched and which may be interrupted by one or more N-containing groups and/or by one or more heteroatoms such as O, S or N, and optionally substituted by one or more OH groups or 1-6 C alkoxy groups; R5 and R6 = H, halogen, 1-4 C alkyl, 1-4 C monohydroxyalkyl, 2-4 C polyhydroxyalkyl, 1-4 C aminoalkyl or a bridging link Y; R7, R8, R9, R10, R11 and R12 = H, a bridging link Y or 1-4 C alkyl; provided that the compounds (I) contain only one bridging link Y per molecule. The pyrazolo-(1,5-a)-pyrimidines have the formula (III) R13, R14, R15 and R16 = H, 1-4 C alkyl, aryl, 1-4 C hydroxyalkyl, 2-4 C polyhydroxyalkyl, (C1-C4) alkoxy alkyl with 1-4 C, 1-4 C aminoalkyl (in which the amino group may be protected by an acetyl, ureido or sulfonyl group), a (C1-C4) alkylamino alkyl with 1-4 C, a di((C1-C4)alkyl)amino alkyl with 1-4 C, (in which the dialkyl radicals may together complete a carbocyclic or heterocyclic group with 5 or 6 ring members), or a hydroxy(C1-C4)alkyl- or di(hydroxy(C1-C4)alkyl)-amino alkyl with 1-4 C ; X = H, 1-4 C alkyl, aryl, 1-4 C hydroxyalkyl, 2-4 C polyhydroxyalkyl, 1-4 C aminoalkyl, a (C1-C4)alkyl amino alkyl with 1-4 C, a di-((C1-C4)alkyl amino alkyl with 1-4 C (in which the dialkyl radicals may together complete a carbocyclic or heterocyclic group with 5 or 6 ring members), a hydroxy(C1-C4)alkyl or di-(hydroxy(C1-C4)alkyl)amino alkyl with 1-4 C, an amino group, a (C1-C4)alkyl- or di-((C1-C4)alkyl)-amino, a halogen atom, carboxylic acid group or sulfonic acid group; i = 0, 1, 2 or 3; p = 0 or 1; q = 0 or 1; n = 0 or 1; with the provisos that (p+q) is not 0; when (p+q) = 2, then n = 0 and the groups NR13R14 and NR15R16 are in the (2,3), (5,6), (6,7), (3,5) or (3,7) positions; and when (p+q) = 1, then n = 1 and the group NR13R14 (or NR15R16) and the OH group are in the (2,3), (5,6), (6,7), (3,5) or (3,7) positions.
