An optical article comprising a mineral substrate with a refractive index of 1.5-1.9 and an anti-reflective, single layer, nanoporous/nanograin coating on at least one surface. The coating is obtained by heat-treating a sol-gel film of interconnected, inorganic polymers also linked with inorganic particles. The polymers form a tri-dimensional network which has the formula M-OH/M-O-M in which M is a metal or metalloid such as silicon, aluminium, zirconium, titanium and mixtures of these. Also claimed is a method of making an optical article by applying a sol-gel of hydrolysed and polymerised alkoxide, acetylacetonate or acetate to a mineral as defined above and heat treating. Also claimed is a sol-gel material consisting of an alkoxide, acetylacetonate or acetate of a metal or metalloid in an organic solvent. The metal or metalloid selected from silicon, aluminium, zirconium, titanium is hydrolysed and polymerised by hydrochloric acid. Preferably the sol gel film is obtained from a solution containing colloidal particles of silica, alumina, zircon and/or titanium oxide.
