<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for cleaning water by using a biological filter which hardly give rise to clogging due to the microbial films grown on the biological filter and substantially prevent the occurrence of the degradation in a water cleaning effect. <P>SOLUTION: Contact filter materials 1 are arranged in respective zones of a water cleaning flow passage consisting of a plurality of the serial zones and raw water for treatment is successively brought into contact with the filter materials 1. The cleaning of the raw water for treatment is performed by the action of the microbial films grown on the respective contact filter materials.
