PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink tank information detector, and an ink jet printer using it, in which ink tank information can be detected with high accuracy by automatically setting the sensitivity of a detector while taking account of variation in the reflectivity at the light reflecting part of the ink tank in addition to the detector. SOLUTION: The ink cartridge information detector comprises a plurality of ink cartridges 32, a photosensor unit 60 for irradiating each ink cartridge 32 with light from a photodiode 61 and receiving the reflected light through a phototransistor 62, and a control section 70 for detecting the intensity of reflected light received at the phototransistor 62 of the photosensor unit 60 as ink cartridge information and presetting the detection sensitivity of an AD converter such that reflected light from the ink cartridge 32 of lower reflectivity can be detected.
