PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet printer capable of detecting correct setting of an ink cartridge surely at a low cost, and an ink cartridge for use therein. SOLUTION: A diode 2d is provided, in series with a fuse 2c, in the inner conduction passage 2b of an ink cartridge 2 and the state of the ink cartridge 2 is judged from the combination of voltages detected at the detecting points A and B at the opposite ends of the inner conduction passage 2b when a detection voltage is applied thereto in the forward and reverse directions. More specifically, a state where the fuse 2c exists in the inner conduction passage 2b, a state where the fuse 2c is blown out under normal use, and a state where the contacts 2e1 and 2e2 at the opposite ends of the inner conduction passage 2b are short-circuited by an external conductive member are discriminated.
