PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wheelchair that can be operated easily even by a weak handicapped person without staining hands or clothes by operating a grip tube and a driving lever installed in the wheelchair to rotate wheels. SOLUTION: A manual mechanism for the wheelchair comprises a main driving body and a locking part. The main driving body comprises a driving body having a return means attached pivotably on the main shaft of the wheelchair and a grip-and-press lower face and a grip-and-press part both provided on the driving body. The locking part is provided on the grip-and-press lower face. In order to narrow down the width of the wheelchair, the driving body is attached pivotably on the main shaft in the space between a frame and the wheel. When a user grips and moves the main driving body, the locking part contacts and presses the wheels and the wheels are rotated by the movement of the locking part resulting from the operation of the main driving body. By pressing the grip-and-press part of the main driving body lightly, the locking part of the main driving body engages credibly with the wheels and the wheels can be credibly rotated due to the locking engagement. Because the return means returns the driving body to its original state, the wheelchair can be driven continuously only by a forward operation. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
