PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thrown-in medal detecting device provided with high detection performance which does not cause the clogging of medals and is not adversely influenced by diffused external light in spite of employing a transmissible photoelectric detection sensor, and also to provide a thrown-in medal selecting device for a game machine. SOLUTION: The thrown-in medal detecting device includes: a medal passage 23 for passing thrown-in medals M by rolling one by one; a discharge port 36 which is opened at one side 22 of a side wall forming the medal passage 23 to discharge the medals; discharge means 31 and 58 at the other side 21 of the side wall to discharge the medals M toward the discharge port 36; and inclination detecting means S1 and S2 which are opposed to the discharge port 36, photoelectrically detect presence of the medals M guided in the medal passage 23 in an oblique direction at a distance from the medal passage 23, and are respectively set at a position higher than the top part Mt of the erected medal and at a position lower than the top part Mt of the erected medal.
